In an astonishing display of sadism, bordering on the sexual, a homophobic British army Major, who dismissed the people of Siwa Oasis as "degenerates", spoke with implicit praise of an Egyptian police officer's technique of extracting confessions in a suspected homocide.
In his 1938 book "Desert and Delta," Major C. S. Jarvis wrote "A few hefty cuts with a riding-whip on the bare buttocks of some of the more convincing of those who had neither seen nor heard anything had the effect of loosening tongues..............." [ 1947 edition p171 ]
and a few pages later he implicitly recommends not just turning a blind eye to extra-judicial executions, but also rewarding Egyptian police officers despite strong suspicions that they had executed suspects before they had any opportunity to stand trial.
"........One must remember that one cannot make omlettes without breaking eggs, and when a real budmash [ bandit ] meets his end it is as well not to ask too many questions. The correct thing to do is to get the Secret Service money out of the safe at once and show that bandit-removal, unlike virtue, needs a reward." [ 1947 edition p174. ]
Later in the book he makes an implicit reference to the homoerotic marriages still commonplace in Siwa Oasis when he dismisses the Oasis and its' "degenerate inhabitants." [ 1947 edition p182. ]
