In 1985 the Egyptian government banned the classic work of arab literature, the "Thousand And One Nights" because of its explicit content, both heterosexual and homoerotic. This despite the fact, that almost all copies on sale were already abridged so that only the tammest stories had been left uncensored.
Ironically, the same year, the classic was deemed "unsuitable reading" for Jewish students by the Israeli director of the British Consulate library in Jerusalem.
Later, in the 1990s, the Egyptian weekly magazine Rose El Yousef published extracts from one of the censored stories but on this occasion the authorities were not provoked into action. But fundamentalists were outraged when in March 2002 U.S. authorities distributed copies of "One Thousand And One Nights," to alleged El Qaeda activists, several of them Egyptian, held at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.
