HELIOPOLIS
The two terrace cafe-restaurants Amphitrion and Palmyra, both on Sharia al-Ahram, are always crowded with people watchers, tired commuters and families eating out and in the evenings you can often spot a few young gay men at one or two of the tables.
If you don't want to part with any cash you might do better lingering outside shop windows in the Horreya Mall, also on Sharia al-Ahram. The weekly magazine Cairo Times recently dismissed it as a "garish eyesore" which we wouldn't dispute, but if you are looking for trade you can probably ignore issues of architectural aesthetics.
Almost one kilometre north of Sharia Al-Ahram are the Merryland park and gardens. Although by day the park is crowded with picnickers, families and children feeding the ducks and long queues to enter the dolphin aquarium, by night a different atmosphere prevails. There are several expensive restaurants and a few cheaper cafes. Those seeking fast food can opt for the nearby McDonalds. There's also atleast one nightclub Da Karma which is not known to be gay but which might be worth a try if you are in the area anyway.
Not far from Helipolis is the ever popular Sindbad Amuseument Park which during holidays attracts some 5000 visitors a day. Built 15 years ago and with some 15 rides, it doesn't have a steep entrance fee like some of Cairo's newer amusement parks and consequently its' clientele is less bourgeois. In other words more rough trade, especially late on a Thursday evening when it often stays open into the early hours.
NASR CITY
If you want to be engulfed in a crowd of stylish youths and middle class young men then you couldn't do better than Genena Mall on Sharia Badrawi off Sharia Abbas El Akkad. On Thursday evenings the Mall is particularly busy. The best location is probably the steps in front of the mall and surrounding area where many of the young men hang out, some with prearranged assignations but a few unencumbered by companions.
In winter you might find the outside steps to cold to linger for too long but there are several other good locations within the Mall. These include the area around the indoor ice skating rink and the immediate vicinity of the giant video game arcade. But equally you could cruise anyone window shopping along any of the many boutiques fronted with vast American style floor to ceiling windows. But don't actually shop here unless you have money to burn !
A somewhat similar alternative is Wonderland Mall, not far away, on sharia Abbas El Akad. You will probably be taken aback by the distinctive but absurd architecture. Once you've recovered from the shock your best bet is either the bowling and billiards centre or just lingering around the fast food court with the usual choice of McDonalds, Dominos Pizza etc. Don't bother with the six screen cinema, unless you are a fan of American films.
HELWAN
If you wish to try something a bit different why not visit the outdoor sulphurous springs at Helwan where the warm water [approx 29 degrees] attracts a large number of bathers during the summer months. In winter the spa is closed.
Many notable Egyptians, including King Farouk, have been believers in the water's healing powers but the proximity of many industrial plants built up during the last fifty years, may place a question over the purity of the water today. Still, with few if any public baths to be found in Cairo, the spring offers a great opportunity to enjoy the company of other adventurous bathers. And some claim the springs, which date back to ancient Egyptian times, are the world's oldest health resort !
Another wonderful refuge in Helwan's otherwise bleak industrial landscape are the Japanese Gardens. You can reach Helwan by the metro and if you need to take a taxi to the gardens tourists should ask for the geneina yabaniya.
Once there you can stroll for hours among the beautiful roses and trees, over the Japanese style bridges and relax in the shade of the pegodas or linger by the shore of the park's impressively large lake. Not surprisingly its a popular spots for lovers, both heterosexual and gay.
