IF THESE MEN ARE CONVICTED IT WILL BE A BLATANT VIOLATION OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS - THE RIGHTS TO FREEDOM AND PRIVACY IN ONE'S PERSONAL RELATIONS. NOT EVEN IN STALIN'S RUSSIA WAS THERE ANY COMPARABLE CASE. THIS TRIAL BRINGS SHAME ON EGYPT, ITS LEGAL SYSTEM, ITS GOVERNMENT AND ITS' PRESIDENT. IF THESE MEN ARE CONVICTED GAYEGYPT.COM WILL BE ASKING ALL TOURISTS TO BOYCOT THE COUNTRY.
June 2001 As Amnesty International condemns the arrest of the "Queen Boat 55" (see 11 May below) the men nevertheless remain in detention. According to the Report by Amnesty they "wrote to the Public Prosecutor expressing [their] concerns and seeking further clarification about the detention of these men," but added that "the organization has still not received a response." Amnesty International declared its belief
"that the vilification and persecution of persons for their sexuality violate the most fundamental principles of international human rights law."
and added that "The right to freedom from discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes sexual orientation, is recognized in regional and international treaties, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Egypt is a state party."
