Constantine Cavafy was born in Egypt in 1863 and though from a Greek family he spent most of his life in Alexandria. Most of his poems deal with homoerotic feelings and love. In fact he was one of the first modern Greek poets to write openly about homosexuality. He died on 29 April 1933, just after his seventieth birthday.
He spent his last 35 years in an apartment in Lepsius Street, now renamed Sharm El Sheik Street and the city now even has its own Cavafy Museum.
Here is one of his poems -
Picture of a 23 year-old youth painted by his friend of the same age.
He completed the painting yesterday noon. Now
he studies every detail. He has painted him in a
grey unbuttoned coat, a dark grey; without
any vest or any tie. With a rose-coloured shirt;
open at the collar, so one can glimpse a little
also of the beauty of his chest, of his neck.
The right temple is almost completely
covered by his hair, his beautiful hair
parted in a fashion which he prefers this year.
There is the uncompromising sensuous tone
he wanted to impart when he was doing the eyes,
when he was doing the lips, the eyes, the mouth, the lips
that are made for consummation, for exquisite love-making.
