Sa'ida Sultana is the name by which Egyptians know Dana International, the Israeli transexual singer who won the Eurovision song contest in May 1998. Some of her songs had arabic lyrics and had long been popular in Cairo although unsurprisingly they had been banned for being a "pernicious influence on morality."
Dana International came from a Yemenite family who moved to Israel in the 1940s. She was born in 1972, changed her sex in 1993 and soon afterwords released her first single. Her beautiful figure and catchy lyrics soon propelled her to fame both in Israel and neighbouring arab countries, much to the annoyance both of orthodox jews and the government in Egypt, which quickly banned her music. But the ban failed to prevent five million pirate cassettes being sold in Cairo.
