  
On 6th October 1981 President Sadat was gunned down by four assassins. He was seated at the front of a virtually unguarded podium; the most honoured spectator of that day's military parade. The event was to commemorate the surprise 1973 assault on Israeli positions across the Suez canal.

The president must surely have felt safe among his army "boys." Alongside him sat the then vice-president Hosni Mubarak and many other top army officers and diplomats. But it was Sadat on whom the gunfire was concentrated.
