SALAH EL DIN AND RICHARD
Salah El-Din (1138-1193) or Saladin (to use his Western name) was the Egyptian ruler who united the Arab World against the Crusades and recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. He has been taken as a role model by several Arab leaders including the late President Assad of Syria and Saddam Hussein. However they chose to overlook his gay reputation which has been more than hinted at in the "Arabian Nights."
His most famous rival, the brave but brutal Richard The Lion Heart, had a secret passion for Saladin and shortly before his death he requested that his heart be buried in Jerusalem. Richard also shared a bed with Philip II of France. According to Gerald, the Archdeacon of Wales, they were inseparable lovers.
Gerald recalled that the English king "so honored Philip that by day they ate at one table, off one dish, and at night they slept in one bed. And the king of France loved him as his own soul." However historian Christopher Tyerman argues that this was a symbol of brotherhood rather than evidence of any erotic relationship.
So perhaps Richard's love for Saladin was unadulterated after all. Unless it was such a clandestine affair which provoked the dispute which led Philip to abandon the Crusade in July 1191 leaving Richard to face Saladin alone. But this is probably the realm of historical fantasy.
However, it is evident that Saladin was more concerned for Richard's welfare than Philip and when, on one ocassion, the English king lay dangerously ill with a fever Saladin not only sent a doctor but also cooling snow which had to be transported rapidly and over a great distance from the Lebanese mountains. However there is no hard evidence Saladin and Richard ever had a sexual relationship.
Saladin's brother Al Adel was also reported to be very close to Richard and at one time he came close to marrying Richard's sister Joanna but in the end Philip's abandonment of Richard and dangers to Richard's overseas kingdoms in France forced the crusader king to return home, travelling back across Europe dsiguised as a kitchen maid.
Saladin himself probably had a relationship with the Turkish eunuch Karakush. At first Karakush was a slave of Saladin's confined to domestic duties in Cairo. But he was rapidly promoted and was responsible for overseeing the construction of Cairo's citadel. Then Saladin appointed him joint emir (with a Kurd called Mashtub) of Acre on the coast of Palestine and in charge of the city's defense against the Crusaders. However he was captured and taken hostage by Philip whose interest, financial or otherwise, in his captive was such that he spared him from the otherwise indiscriminate massacre which followed the city's fall. May be he thought Saladin would offer a massive randsome for his beloved.
